What is a coiled keyboard cable, and what purpose does it serve?

Our custom cables are USB 2.0 protocol cables designed to serve dual functions. Initially, they operate as standard USB cables, providing power to your Mechanical Keyboard.

Secondly, they serve an aesthetic purpose, enhancing the overall look of your keyboard and desk setup with their attractive design. With a wide array of colours available and featuring a coiled section, along with detachable connectors like the Gx16, Gx12 (Aviator connector), Yc8, Lemo, or Mini XLR, these cables offer high levels of customisation to suit individual preferences. They truly stand out alongside your mechanical keyboard.  Furthermore, the fact that they are fully handcrafted enhances the buying and user experience.

Are custom coiled cables better for your mechanical keyboard?

In essence, the answer varies. From a technical standpoint, not significantly. However, from a visual perspective, unquestionably. The nuanced response hinges on personal preference. If you appreciate colourful keycaps and the ability to customise your mechanical keyboard with an array of captivating colours, investing in diverse keycaps and aviator cables can elevate your keyboard's aesthetics and enhance the ambience of your workspace. In this light, the mechanical keyboard hobby transcends functionality and evolves into an art form.

While a $10 keyboard paired with a $2 cable and mouse pad serves its purpose, many of us opt to express our individuality through the colours, sounds, and tactile experiences of our keyboards. So, does owning a beautifully crafted keyboard with vibrant keycaps and an aesthetically pleasing cable bring me happiness? Absolutely, but that's just my personal preference :).

Why are custom cables frequently named coiled Aviator cables?

This naming comes from the most popular cable detachable connectors that are used within the hobby - the Gx16 and Gx12 connectors, also known as Aviator connectors.
This retro-inspired look perfectly complements the often-industrial or retro-themed design of many mechanical keyboards, adding a touch of satisfying, old-school charm to your modern desk setup. Most of our models are with Aviator detachables. You can browse them > here <.

Are these custom cables ONLY for Mechanical keyboards?

No! If your device is equipped with USB 2.0 ports, our cables will work. They can also charge, but at a low speed. You can use them for trackballs, Steam Decks, numpads, and different types of docks. Matching all your cables on your desk will surely look much better! Just make sure your device runs on USB 2.0.

Are coiled USB-C cables compatible with any mechanical keyboard?

Our cables coiled or not, are compatible with 99% of the mechanical keyboards on the market. Almost all keyboards use USB 2.0. Because the total length of the cables is pretty long, that might cause power issues with some older power-hungry keyboards like HHKB and Drop keyboards. If you have one of those keyboards, we recommend shorter cables.

What are coils? How to coil a cable?

The Coils are the looped/spiral section of the cable. Some people call them with the funny name curly usb cable. They are purely for aesthetic purposes. The inner diameter is 1.1 cm, and the outer is 2.1 cm. It is considered a medium-sized coil wire, and the golden ratio, in our opinion.
The cable coiler we use is an aluminum rod. The cable is coiled around it with a specific technique, mastered with practice. In order for the coil to remain strong and tight, we use a special technique called "reverse coiling" combined with multiple heating cycles. All done by hand! The coils are tight, even, and springy, and should last for years if treated properly. Stretching the coils is not recommended as it can harm the shape and form of the cable.

What USB connections do our custom cables support?

That is your coiled cable keyboard connection. The default connection is USB-C to USB-A. One of the most common questions is whether our cables support USB-C to USB-C connection. Yes, they do! You can also choose an older USB Micro or USB Mini.

 - USB C to USB A, or USB C to USB C
 - USB Micro to USB A, or USB Micro to USB C
 - UBS Mini to USBA, or USB Mini to USB C

What is referred to as the device end?

The device end is your keyboard port. Newer keyboards have USB-C, which is the best technology to date. Some older models have USB Mini or USB Micro ports. The drive end is wrapped with heat-shrink for extra protection. Most of the mechanical keyboards have their ports on the back, but some companies have a weird placement on the side. You can use an angled USB C to C adapter for that, or just pick a suitable coil alignment.

What is the host end? And do our coiled cables work with MacBooks?

The host end is your computer or maybe a USB hub. Usually referred to as the host cable, it is the straight part of the cable connected to your PC. Also known as a USB A cable. You can customize the length of the cable and also choose a different host connection, like USB-C to C. For our Mac users, USB-C to USB-C is always the way to go. Our keyboard cables work without an issue on any Mac device.

Can you charge devices with our cables?

Yes, and no! You can technically charge a device with USB 2.0, but the charging speed will be very slow. We have a client who purchased a USB C coil cable for charging docks for mice and earphones, as they don't care about the low speed. We do plan to start making USB 3.1 cables that will charge much faster.

What are the detachable connectors and the differences between them?

This quick lock connector, situated in the middle of your cable, is also referred to as a cable connector. We provide various types of cable connectors, with most individuals selecting based on their visual appeal. In terms of technical functionality, the connectors do not differ. Their primary distinction lies in how they attach and detach.

Presently, our offerings include Gx16, Gx12 (also recognized as Aviators), Yc8, Mini XLR, and Lemo styles."

Different cable connectors. Gx16, Gx12, Mini XLR, Lemo connectors, all 4-pin.

Gx16 – Also called Aviator. The lock/unlock mechanism is with a screwing ring. This is a chunky connector that is loved by the community and is the most common choice.

 - Gx12 - The lock/unlock mechanism is with a screwing ring. The Gx12 is just a smaller variant of the Gx16. 12 stands for the circumference - 12mm. Besides the size, there is no heat shrink on both sides of the connector.

 - Yc8 - Yc8 has a push-pull mechanism. Faster to lock/unlock, smaller in size, and also, the standard Yc8 has a nice platinum look.

 - Mini XLR - Push-pull connector with a nice metallic look. It locks/unlocks with a small button.

 - Lemo style - It's considered the premium choice. It's a push-pull connector with a classy look and a higher price.

How do we paint our detachable connectors?

We paint our detachable connectors only with high-quality ceramic paint called Cerakote. The coating provides great colors and a decent level of scratch resistance. All of our connectors are paid by hand, with extra care. We do our best to follow the official Cerakote guidelines. The connectors are coated with multiple layers of paint and are heat-cured.

What is coil direction/alignment?

Your coil direction will determine the alignment of your coil. Take into consideration where your keyboard port is and your host position (PC on left or right). Check the photos for a visual representation. Selecting the right direction ensures the best aesthetics for your keyboard cable. However, there is some flexibility, as the cables are adjustable and can be positioned to your preference. Direction 3 is the most versatile, as you can point the cable in any direction.

What is heat shrink, and what purpose does it serve for your keyboard cable?

Heat-shrink is the wrap around your USB C/A/MiniB/Micro, also at both ends of your Gx16. It’s made of polyolefin, and its original purpose is isolation. It also comes in a few colors, so that helps a lot with fully customizing the colors of your cable. The heat-shrink enhances the structural integrity of your USB-C connector by providing an additional protective layer. This reinforcement helps safeguard the connection point against mechanical stress, reducing the risk of wear and tear over time.

What does your soldering process look like?

All of our USB keyboard cables are soldered by hand. Soldering the USB-C connector is the most precise work. It takes some experience and great attention to detail. This is the most important part of our job. Doing it right will ensure your cable's longevity. On top of the soldering points, we add hot silicone. That gives the connector much better protection.

Do you offer a warranty for your cables?

Yes, we do! We offer a 12-month warranty. But even after that, we do our best to help with anything we can. Just contact us if you have any issues.

Why aren't keyboard cables cheap?

They are not, indeed! But there is a good reason for that. Each keyboard cable is made by hand. Handwork is expensive. It requires patience, effort, and precision. Each cables take between 1 and 1.5 hours to be finished. Without counting the testing, packing, etc.  At the end of the day, this is a hobby for us, and we love it, but we do work hard for it.

Can I just buy a coiled cable without going deep into the customization options?

Yes, you can! We have over 80 pre-built coiled keyboard cables, ready to dispatch. You can still customize the essentials, but you can also use our "Same as the photo" option. You will receive your cable just as it is in the photos. Same specifications.
You can check our collection of coiled keyboard cable models here.
But for those who prefer to design their cables from scratch, you can start at our custom cable builder.

Finally, some technical Information.

Our cables are USB 2.0, 28 AWG - 4 wires (2 for data, 2 for power). They are not meant for charging or any other purpose besides powering mechanical keyboards. All of our cable connectors are 4-pin. The total width is around 4-4.5mm.
